Bio:

Eric Buchanan represents disabled individuals and policyholders nationwide in ERISA and non-ERISA disputes, focusing on disability insurance, long term disability (LTD), life, and health insurance. Eric has been recognized with a Martindale-Hubbell “AV” rating since 2007, the peer rating for the highest level of professional excellence, and has represented hundreds of clients in federal court cases pursuing disability and insurance benefits. He regularly teaches other attorneys on topics such as ERISA, disability law, social security law, and related insurance matters.

Leadership Positions:

Eric has served as a leader in multiple organizations, including as President of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association (TTLA) from 2015-2016, chair of the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Social Security Disability Section from 2007-2008, and chair of the  AAJ ERISA Health and Disability Litigation Group from 2006-2007. Eric also served as past chair Tennessee Bar Association Disability Section from 2005-2006 and as past president of the Chattanooga Trial Lawyers.

Publications and Presentations:

Eric regularly speaks at national conferences such as the American Association for Justice (AAJ), National Organization of Social Security Representatives (NOSSCR) National Disability ConferenceAAJ Social Security Disability Conference, and the American Conference Institute (ACI) annual disability insurance seminar.  For a list of many of Eric’s lectures at legal conferences, click here.

Background:

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Washington and Lee University School of Law, Eric ranked in the top 10% of his class. In law school he was also inducted into the Order of the Coif and the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity.  Before pursuing law, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and served as a U.S. Navy officer from 1989 to 1994. His naval career included roles as a naval aviator, pilot-in-command, and mission commander of P-3C Orion sub-hunting aircraft. Notably, Eric served as his squadron’s legal officer, earning a Navy Achievement Medal.  Eric is an Eagle Scout and a member of the Red Bank High School Hall of Fame.

Hobbies & Interests:

Eric has served on the board of the Boy Scouts Cherokee Area Council and as a district chair for the Friends of Scouting annual fundraising luncheon.  He has also served on the board of the local YMCA camp, Camp Ocoee. When not helping clients or working to improve his firm, Eric and his wife enjoy golf and their Labrador retrievers.
